A few years ago I was diagnosed withcancer. It was the most difficult time I have ever faced. I think it was mysense of humor that allowed me to hold on my sanity. Like many people who havegone through chemotherapy. I lost all of my hair and I was bald as a golf ball.I had always enjoyed wearing hats, so I ordered several special hats with thehair already attached. It was easy and I never had to worry about how my hairlooked.

I have always been a big golf fan. At onepoint during my cancer treatments, my husband John and I decided to get awayfrom the cold Minnesota winter and take a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona. Therewas a senior PGA Tour event called The Tradition being played, which seemedlike just the ticket to lift my spirits.

The first day of the tournament brought outa huge crowd. It was a beautiful day, and I was in heaven. I was standing andwatching my three favorite golfers in the world approach the tee box: JackNicklaus, Raymond Floyd and Tom Weiskoph. Just as they arrived at the tee box,the unimaginable happened. Ahuge gust of wind came up from out of nowhere and blew my hat and hair rightoff my head and into the middle of the fairway! The thousands of spectatorslining the fairway fell into an awkward silence, all eyes fixed on me. Even mygolf idols were watching me, as my hair was right in their flight path. I wasmortified! I knew I couldn’t just stand there. Someone had to dosomething to get things moving again. So I took a deep breath and went out intothe middle of the fairway. I grabbed my hat and hair, nestled them back on myhead as best I could. Then I turned to the golfers and loudly announced: “Gentlemen, the wind is blowing from left to right.”

They saidthe laughter could be heard all the way to the nineteenth hole.

I told my friend Graham that I often cycletwo miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a bighill on the route. He replied, “You mean fortunately.” He explained that Ishould be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.

My attitude to the hill has now changed. Iused to complain as I approached it but now I tell myself the following. Thishill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and getfit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who paymoney to go to a gym and sit on stationery exercise bicycles when I can get thesame value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of thehill.

Problems are there to be faced andovercome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was thefirst deaf and blind person to gain auniversity degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote,“Character cannot be developed in ease. Only through experiences of sufferingcan the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and successachieved.”[来源:Zxxk.Com]

One of the main determinants of success inlife is our attitude towards adversity. From time to time we all facehardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. Some are of our making butmany are no fault of our own. While we cannot choose the adversity, we canchoose our attitude towards it.

Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he hadboth legs cut off following a flying accidentHe wasdetermined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flyingaviators in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the GermansHe was an inspiration to others during the war. Hesaid, “Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, you’ll never use crutches or a stick, andthen have a go at everything. Go to school, and join in all the games you can.Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that things aretoo difficult or impossible.”

The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they tooksteps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that theydid not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won. Nevertheless, there is still the problemof how you change your attitude towards adversity.

28. Which of the following is true according to the author of thepassage?

A. Going to a gym is greatly beneficial topeople’s health.

   B. Climbing hills on bicycles is the best way to takeexercise.

   C. Those who want to achieve success can’t expect to live aneasy life.

   D. People’s attitude to adversity is the only factor oftheir success.

  A. Failure is the mother of success              B. A bad workmanquarrels with his tools.

C. If you risk nothing, you will havenothing.  D. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.

30. Following this passage, the author will further talk about        .

  A. how his friend helped him to change his attitude towards theadversity he faced

  B. what steps to take to change your attitude towards theadversity you face

Addingmath talk to story time at home is a winning factor for children’s mathachievement, according to a new research from a university. The study frompsychologists Sian Beilock and Susan Levine shows a marked increase in mathachievement among children whose families used Bedtime Math, an iPad app thatdelivers engaging math story problems for parents and children to solvetogether.

Evenchildren who used the app with their parents as little as once a week saw gainsin math achievement by the end of the school year. The app’s effect wasespecially strong for children whose parents tend to be anxious oruncomfortable with math.

Previousresearch from this group has demonstrated the importance of adults’ attitudesabout math for children’s math success. For example, a recent study found thatmath-anxious parents who help their children with math homework actually weakentheir children’s math achievement.

Thenew findings demonstrate that structured, positive interactions around math athome can cut the link between parents’ uneasiness about math and children’s lowmath achievement.

“Manypeople experiencehigh levels of anxiety when they have to solve a math problem, with a majorityof adults feeling at least some worries about math,” said Beilock, professor inPsychology and author of Choke, a book about stress and performance. “Thesemath-anxious parents are probably less likely to talk about math at home, whichaffects how competent their children are in math. Bedtime Math encourages adialogue between parents and kids about math, and offers a way to engage inhigh-quality math interactions in a low-effort, high-impact way.”

Studyparticipants included 587 first-grade students and their parents. Families weregiven an iPad installed with a version of the Bedtime Math app, with whichparents and their children read stories and answer questions involving math, including topics like counting, shapes and problem-solving. A control groupreceived a reading app that had similar stories without the math content andquestions related to reading comprehension instead. Children’s math achievementwas assessed at the beginning and end of the school year. Parents completed aquestionnaire about their nervousness with math.

Themore times parents and children in the math group used the app, the higherchildren’s achievement on a math assessment at the end of the school year.Indeed, children who frequently used the math app with their parentsoutperformed similar students in the reading group by almost three months inmath achievement at year’s end.

32.   BedtimeMath is an iPad app that _____.

A.requires parents and children to answer reading comprehension questions

B.assesses children’s math achievement and parents’ nervousness with math

C.teaches children how to count, recognize shapes and solve practical problems

D.encourages children together with their parents to solve math story problems [来源:Zxxk.Com]

B.children’s math achievement is related to parents’ attitude about math

C.interactions around math at home will cut off the family relationship

D.children can achieve more success if they see the importance of math

34.   We caninfer from the passage that ______.

A.children using the app for three months can see gains in math achievement

B.children whose parents are uneasy about math outperform other students

C.it is the math problems related to the stories that make the great difference

D.the frequency of using the app has nothing to do with children’s achievement

35.   Whichis the best title for the passage?

       A.High-quality math interactions improve performance.

B.Frequent use of app can develop problem solving ability.

A famous saying goes that: “Interest is the best teacher.” This newsystem is a good way to inspire students’ study enthusiasm because studentshave the chance to choose the lessons and the teachers according to their owninterest. Since students have to think about it carefully before they choosethe lessons, this system can also improve the ability of making decisions.

On the other hand, there are, however, somedisadvantages lying in this new system. For one thing, students may feelembarrassed when they talk with classmates they are not very familiarwith because classrooms and classmates are all unfixed. For another thing, during breaks, students have to find the classroom where they will have the nextclass. Does it mean that students have less time to relax?

In all, this is totally a new idea. Wemight as well have a try and we will see if it is suitable for students or not.
